Arizona lane filtering law
Lane filtering legal since September 24, 2022
Arizona allows filtering past stopped traffic on streets with at least two lanes going the same way and a speed limit of 45 mph or less. The rider must keep to 15 mph or less. Riding between lanes in any other situation is still illegal.
The rules a rider must follow
Every condition below comes from the statute. If one isn’t met, the normal lane rules apply and riding between lanes is not allowed.
- Only the operator of a two-wheeled motorcycle may filter § 28-903(F)
- Filter only past vehicles that are stopped in the same direction of travel § 28-903(F)
- Only when the movement may be made safely § 28-903(F)
- The street must be divided into at least two adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel § 28-903(F)(1)(a)
- The street's speed limit must not exceed 45 mph § 28-903(F)(1)(b)
- Ride at no more than 15 mph while filtering § 28-903(F)(2)
- Outside subsection F, riding between lanes or between adjacent rows of vehicles stays prohibited § 28-903(C)
“The operator of a two-wheeled motorcycle may overtake and pass another vehicle that is stopped in the same direction of travel … and may operate the motorcycle between lanes of traffic if the movement may be made safely”
Ask your legislators
If you ride in Arizona, the law already allows this. Riders in other states can point their legislators to it as a working example. Find yours on the Arizona State Legislature legislator lookup or at mystatereps.com.
